This video highlights the Personal Action Toward Health, or PATH, program which is presenting by a number of organizations across Michigan. PATH is a free six-week community workshop that meets two and one-half hours, one day per week, designed to benefit adults with any long-term health problem including arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, emphysema, asthma, bronchitis, overweight, and depression. Family members, friends and caregivers are also encouraged to attend the workshop. PATH is designed for participants to learn self-management skills and tools that may ease the symptoms of their health problem. The workshop emphasis is on creating personal action plans and setting practical, achievable goals. Two trained leaders conduct the workshop. (One or both may have a lifelong health condition.) Topics covered include managing symptoms, coping with difficult emotions, understanding medications, working with a health care team, communication skills, relaxation techniques, eating well and exercising safely and easily. PATH is taught in English at most locations, but also available in other languages including Arabic, several Asian languages and Spanish. (The Spanish program is entitled Tomando Control de su Salud.)

Since the times of Emperor Haile Selassie I, she has become a legend in Ethiopian music. Asnakech accompanies herself on the Krar, the small Ethiopian lyre. She bought her first instrument for 25 Cents when she was a child and learned how to play the instrument by watching the Azmari, the Ethiopian musicians that are sometimes compared with the minnesingers and troubadours of the European Middle Ages. Asnakech began performing in small bars and cabarets. But before starting her career as a famous singer and musician, she first started to work as an actress and dancer at the City Hall Theatre in 1952 and later on in 1955 at the Haile Selassie I Theatre, where she started to sing and play the Krar beside her work as an actress. There she worked until her retirement in the late 80s. At that time, Asnakech was the first actress in Ethiopia and the only famous woman beside Mary Armede who played the Krar. For many years she was recognized to be one of the greatest Krar players in Ethiopia. She became the most famous traditional female musician in her home country. Dear All, This is my amateur bad attempt to try to make my videos a little more fun. It’s a conversation starter — not medical advice. If you’d like more information, please check out my blog, where under the article “probiotics” I posted more detailed information: www.bostonmedicalstudent.wordpress.com here are some references: The main point is that: 1) clostridium difficile is a serious, bad, bacterial problem in the US that hits patients who have taken antibiotics and patients who are in the hospital. Just today, (4/30/07) our professor told us that four patients died of clostridium difficile at his hospital last year. The bad news is that conventional antibiotics can fail to cure clostridium difficile. And when they fail it could lead to death. The good news it that they could be potentially treated with probiotics (although a funkier version of probiotics) when conventional antibiotics fail. It might seem ridiculous to try Dr. Aas’ probiotics — but I want to bring his work to your attention because conventional antibiotics do fail with regards to c. difficile. With Dr. Aas, he’s reported success with this form of treatment when patients can’t fight off C. difficile with metronidazole or vancomycin (these are the common antibiotic treatments). Point #2: Von Niel argues that probiotics should be considered a mainstream therapy given the many positive results seen in randomized controlled trials (see the Von Niel reference).
