Ways To Get Rid Of Acne And Prevent Scaring

Many teens and young adults often face a skin condition called acne. Acne forms under the skin, thus washing away the oils from the surface of your skin does little to cure or even prevent acne. There is still a myth that acne is caused by not washing enough. Gentle washing is important as one step in to get rid of acne, however, washing too much often does more to irritate whiteheads and blackheads. Infection of these conditions only causes more pimples to form.

Gentle cleansing of the skin should be done using only mild cleansers. There are several of these cleansers that are specifically designed for persons who have acne problems.

Exfoliating is the process that removes the dead layer of skin cells from your face. This is an important process that should be done once or twice each week. After using the gentle cleanser, use an exfoliate with a facial scrub. Be gentle in the use of the exfoliate and do not scrub too hard to irritate the acne. Use of the exfoliate helps to reduce the dead skin cells as well as other debris that can clog your pores and cause you to have more acne.

Cosmetics should be oil free to prevent more clogging of pores. An oil free moisturizer helps to prevent over drying of the face. Sunscreens should also be oil free. Hair products often contain a lot of oil and this oil can bleed onto the face causing pores to be clogged.

Products that are designed to prevent clogging of pores are called noncomedogenic. These products are very important in the process of getting rid of acne.

If your acne is still causing problems after these steps, you will want to try some of the better treatments that are available without prescription. The best of these treatments will contain benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide was once only available by prescription, however it has been available over the counter for many years. Start with the lower strength product and try it for four to six weeks. If you do not see any improvement, then you should increase the product strength and try it for another four to six weeks.

If you still do not get an improvement in the condition of you skin, it is time to see a doctor. There are several medications that doctors commonly prescribe.

One of these products is Retin-A which will cause significant drying of the skin. It can also cause reddening of the skin. You should only use this product at night as it increases sun sensitivity. Use of this product can at times take several months before any improvement is noticed in the acne. In fact, in many patients, the problem becomes worse before it gets better.

Antibiotics are often useful if other medications do not make a difference in the condition of the acne. They help when you suffer from red or swollen acne. Antibiotics help to prevent whiteheads by killing the bacteria responsible for them.

Accutane is also only available by prescription. It is a pill and is used by people who’s acne is likely to cause severe scaring or cannot be kept in control by any other medications. Accutane may affect you blood count, so frequent blood testing is important.

It is not always easy to get rid of acne, but these steps can help to reduce any long term effects.
